Day 73: Syracuse and Saint Lucia
We are back in Italy, a country with so much history and sooooo much to see! Before leaving Sicily we made a stop in Syracuse. That is the home town of the Saint Lucia, who we celebrate in Sweden every year on December 13. She has a pretty interesting and tragic story that is worth reading.
First stop was the archeological site in Syracuse with a Greek theater and a fun cave named Dionysus' Ear.
Above the amphitheater was several caves who looked like they had been used for something special.
The caves |
Dionysos' Ear was in a different part of the park where there was several citrus trees. Of course Marlee climbed the trees and got us all yummy clementines!

By the exit there are some remains of and old bath place |
Next was the Cathedral of Syracuse, downtown Syracuse... The Cathedral has an interesting history and was not a Christian building at all when it was first built. Today it holds several relics of the Saint Lucia.
I am actually not sure what these /year are for (1918) :-) |

Leaving Syracuse we headed north east where we had booked a small apartment in Papasidero. The weather was rainy and grey when we were there but the little town in the mountain was a positive surprise. It was very charming and had many old buildings. I wish I had good pictures to show but I don't...
MÃ¥nga intressanta grottor. Det brukar killar gilla.
